Jem Hall Clinic at Fort Jamie Knox in Ireland: May 2007

We had been to Brandon Bay a couple of times before; once early in our windsurfing career when we had to run for home mid-week, as massive storms started to cancel ferries and a second time at Jamie Knox's, when Connor went back to basics and did his RYA level 1 on Scraggy bay.

This time Connor was on a Jem Hall Wave Sailing Clinic with 4 other elite learners, continuing to build his skills under the demanding and precise mentorship of Jem.

Jamie Knox's Windsurfing Centre was the base for all the activities and once again Jamie not only provided the best breakfasts in Ireland but also proved to be a great host making sure that the Jem Hall Show visited all the spots that had the best action during the week. Jamie's breakfasts are now even better with a pancake and smoothie service courtesy of Ruby and Duncan Knox - don't forget to order early before they all go!!

The week was a huge success from many points of view: Connors sailing took a step jump improvement, the conditions were great all week but best of all was a mast high, force 6 wave session on the final Friday and the team of acolytes were fantastic company and really worked well in learning as a team.

Jamie Knox not only worked hard to make sure our week was totally excellent, but so did his team who were amazingly helpful and a particular thanks go to Jeremy and Sam. Brandon Bay is divided into different beach breaks, which work best in certain wind and wave conditions, so don't hesitate to ask the JK crew for the best place to sail on the day.

If you haven't been on a Jem Hall Clinic then book one now - it's a great way to spend a week of hard work and play to improve your windsurfing and to feed the need to windsurf.

Saturday 12th May: Waiting for Jem with a blasting session at Scraggane.

Jamie's place - shop on the right and the Lodge dead ahead

The flags were the first thing we checked every morning

Strong Currents - but no mention of strong waves!

The kelp stranded on the beach was put to good use as fertiliser by the local farmers

Greg tries out the 9.5 m Ezzy Infinity - probably the biggest sail he's ever used!

Sunday 13th May: Day 1 of the clinic and a solid day of fine tuning the basics at Scraggane

Scraggane is relatively sheltered from the big waves but gets the wind, so great for chop hopping

Jem and Connor blasting

Connor was chasing Clive but couldn't resist hopping

...and at the end of the day even Wild Horses need to go home

Above:

Nice little synchronised sequence of Jem and Connor taking advantage of Scraggane's great bump and jump condition

Monday 14th May: everyone learned that the wind comes in with the tide...

Tuesday 15th May: Now it's serious, the morning spent learning the moves and then out for more training

Jem shows the Jedi wave moves

Clive looking very serious and a bit like a Jedi

Paul wondering if Clive is going to catch him on the turn

Connor gets to grips with keeping his hands close together

Rob having a good old push

Above:

Grasshopper Porridge is awesome - 100% organic and wholesome and a fantastic way to keep warm and fuelled on the water. The photo's show how a desire for more Grasshopper porridge can make people behave in a rather strange manner...

Greg looking like he just remembered he had a harness on after all that boom stroking

No journal of a Jem hall Clinic would be complete without a 'V' for Victory

Con with (another RRD) board of his desire: the Twin Tip

Rob focussing on driving hard into a speed tack

Wednesday 16th May: Morning and yes we were waiting for the wind and waves on the tide...

The Cavalcade returns to Kilcummin

Connor having a quiet look in the back of Jems van to see what RRD and Ezzy goodies are hidden in it's depths

Jem just checking that everything is still there...

There are only so many photo's you can take of windsurf junkies having fun, but these are from the morning preparation and wait for the wind and waves

Greg starting the long walk up the beach at low tide

Connor's turn to test the wind

Greg's first surfing experience - not a bad effort

Paul shows he's surfed before

Clive returns from his turn at testing the conditions

International Rescue were on hand all day...

Wednesday 16th: Afternoon and the tide definitely brought the wind and waves

Connor refuelling

Nice little sequence of Paul showing that his youth was not at all mis-spent and that he can now enjoy the benefits of spending so many years surfing

Jem catching up with his surf board after his safety leash snapped in a gentle wave

Friday 18th May: Big Friday, morning...and no need to wait for the turning tide - everyone out in logo to mast high waves in a steady force 6 that was gusting force 9...

Connor looking a tad nervous on his way down to the waves

Clive just wondering whether his mast looks big in this...

Brian just checking out what's happening

Friday 18th: afternoon and a move to the relative safety of Scraggane Bay as the waves cover the beach in Brandon Bay, mind you it's now around a steady Force 7... Connor had to borrow one of Jamies small sails a his smallest sail was A 3.7 metre...
