Feedback from Training: Whitwell

23rd May Ian feedback on Whitwell UKWA event
Hi Guys,

I thought it was worth dropping a quick note out regarding whitwell last weekend. I know you weren't all there, but the feedback is relevant to all.

1 - Preparation is everything - we're still seeing kit issues on the water (there are less, but they are still evident) - make sure your knots are sorted etc etc

2 - Preparation - same lines - we're in May, yet some of you are still competing in winter wetsuits?? The body will not perform as well as you want it to when overheating

3 - Preparation - Boat bags - we're there to support you, yet many of you didn't bother taking boat bags out, or worse still, raced with a big bag on??you need to be able to re-fuel between races, not refuelling is not an option

4 - Starting / the first beat - make sure you're kit set up is spot on - you shouldn't be starting and then adjusting your kit within 30 seconds of the start e.g. putting more downhaul on etc

5 - Boardhandling - on the startline is key - I can't believe how many crashes I saw - you MUST find clear spare - this is absolute key

6 - The rules / boardhandling - practice being able to bear away to 'duck' below someone on the beat - we had too many crashes! You're all confident and good at boardhandling and you should be able to avoid ALL collisions

7 - The rules / protests - be confident - you've now sat through a run through of a protest - be clear in what you're doing and be prepared if you do get called into a protest

As ever, any queries, give me a shout and I'll come back to you as quick as I can.

Ian

15th May 2007 Feedback to Beth's group

The aim of Whitwell was to improve everyone’s starts and pre-start routines:

 - The main points we were looking at were: Transit

                                                                      Bias

                                                                      On Line

                                                                      Space

                                                                      Timing

- Remember guys its not just the transit you need to get a good start but also the bias of the line. The transit may be correct but you may be on the wrong tack and get sailed over (not good!!)

- Think of bias and transit working together and if one fails the other doesn’t work

- One more major key point is you cant just assume a bias is on one side – the wind may be shifting so go for the safe option (normally starboard)

We also did an exercise of three different starts:

1. On the line a minute to go

2. Start any time in the last minute

3. Time yourself

The three starts above are a great way to practise your boardhandling and going through pre-start routines (those 5 mentioned above) so use them!!!!

After we got the basics of where the line was, the bias, transit etc these starts were going really well and it was clear everyone was improving so well done.

Overall guys it was a very productive weekend and I was impressed.

Congrats to all of you for the ET, see you at West Kirby

Beth

Feedback from Ian on Sundays sailing

This photo was taken with less than a minute to go on a port biased line – should ALL be on the line

Port biased line – several sailors in good positions e.g. Lindsay (650). Nikki is at the wrong end of the line, but she is on the line – which is a big positive. All the 2nd / 3rd and 4th row sailors are at a disadvantage and should get on the line asap

Less than a minute to go and only 3 sailors are near the line (Kate / Callum / George)

Go Go Go Go Go – at this point you should be working flat out, and anyone caught in dirty air should tack

Jamie / Harriet’s doing the right thing and tacking. However, RULES – Charlie must be shouting starboard. Also, look at Matt’s sail, bums knees 90 degrees, and a perfect upright mast – excellent stuff

less than 10 seconds to go – CHECK OUT THE LINE SAG!

This was actually taken about 5 seconds after the go – no-one’s crossed the line yet

Beth (065) needs to think about tacking asap due to dirty wind

The race to the finish is on – good work

Matt should think about bearing away and taking the sailors wind of those in front of him

As above, Connor should do all he can to take Nikki’s wind

This will be close!

Great start by Oli and Robyn!

Look at the benefit having a good start does for Oli and Robyn – they’re above the whole fleet

Same again

Kate (984) and Kieran (9562) have given the others a head start by not being on the line – Know your transit and get on the line!

Josh also appears to have missed the line here – however, for the clear wind it’s better to keep going and then tack when in clear wind

Jamie working hard to get back in the mix having been over the line

The gun’s about to go and no-one’s near the line

– Oli is in dirty wind and should think about tacking

Good trim on Joe’s board – excellent

Connor (678) and Josh (579) must get round and on the line – proof is on the next slide!

There’s the proof! What a start by Lindsay

Watch for the port / starboard issues!

Feedback

Saturday am

Aim of this session was to introduce a pre start routine and to put it to use with some practice starts.

Pre start work can be as important as the race itself so it is important to get into a routine of things to do. This way you wont miss any thing out.

Your pre start routine should include

  • Transit
  • Bias
  • Sailing the first beat to help you decide which way to go
  • Position on the line

 Feedback

The rules still apply in training!!

Saturday pm

The aim of this session was to work on upwind sailing.

Feedback

The wind conditions were 13-15 knots  after speaking to Oli we decided that you need a constant 16-17knots to go track back/daggerboard up so you should have been sailing with the dagger board down.

When sailing with the daggerboard down it is important to

  • Keep the sail upright: to do this you need quite long harness lines or the sail will get pulled over your head.
  • Keep the sail sheeted in: to do this you need to make sure your harness lines are far enough back.
  • Keep a straight 7: on flat water you can keep your legs and body much straighter 7 shape

Sunday am

The aim of this session was to work on lay lines.

Upwind. After a few attempts we decided the best technique was to look over your front shoulder until you could not see the mark, then look over the back to check, then tack (if needed)

Downwind: it is good to use a mark on your sail to judge the lay line rather than just gybing because “ it feels right” in the conditions we had on Sunday morning 8-11 knots, the signature of the sail maker seemed to be a good gauge.

Good look with the ET!!!!!

1st may 2007 Ian, initial feedback on training
Hello all,

Just a quick note on a few things following what was an excellent wknd at whitwell:

1 - Well Done - it was a superb performance by everyone and we're now starting to look sharp on the water

2 - group feedback will follow asap

3 - Any queries / issues on the Twiname, please let me know

4 - There are already photos on the website - feedback will follow on these asap - USE THE WEBSITE, It's got loads of gret stuff on there

5 - A huge thank you to Oli for coming up, and to Bob / Rob / Oz for all their help on the boats - without these guys we wouldn't be able to run the quality of coaching that we have.

More feedback to follow.....

Ian
