In
2004 we formed Halifax Hurricanes.
We
compete in the North Zone North, and our sparring partners are: The Coquet
Crushers from Amble, the North Lincs'. Invaders from Barton-upon -Humber, Surfstore Allstars
and the 2005 team winners the Covenham Cyclones.
We started the
2004 season with just one sailor - Connor, (sail # 678) - who was joined by his brother
Kai, (sail #679).
In
2005 Halifax Hurricanes were sponsored by Bic Sport in the UK, through
Ultrasport, so many thanks to them for making it all happen.
David
Dobson is the RYA organiser/judge/jury/scorer for the region. You can read his
reports on the events on the T15 web site by clicking on ''Inter Club'' and then
''North (n) Zone''. Without
David's hard work we wouldn't have so much fun, so many thanks to him.

Derrick and
team at Covenham warmly welcomed the North T15 clubs for the first meet
of the season on Sunday 14th May. Everyone catching up with old friends
and making lots of new ones, Pugneys Pirates from Wakefield had their
initiation into the thrills and spills that is T15 with lots of races
for all fleets. David Dobson was the perfect race master ably assisted
by John Mcaffee who ran the 3.5 and 4.5 races. The lunch laid on
by the Covenham Cyclones was greatly appreciated as were the warm cups
of tea to thaw everyone out. David

Surfstore
was the venue for the last T15 event of the year and we were treated to
bright sunshine, wind which changed direction on a whim and great
hospitality from the Surfstore crew. Everyone had loads of fun and the
sailors spent more time in and on the water than at any event. David
Dobson assisted by John from Surfstore, made sure that there was a race
happening every minute of the day and the prize giving was the highlight
with Covenham Cyclones taking the Region accolade for best team of 2006.

2005 race
Meeting, visitors to the Scottish Zone |

|
On
20th August we took the opportunity to compete at Castle Semple Loch
against the East Kilbride Eagles and the local Clyde Barracudas. It was
a glorious day, although the wind was light and sometimes disappeared
altogether. Excellent racing was had, however, with Kai coming in 3rd in
the 3.5 meter and Connor winning in the 6.6 meter against 6 other
sailors. Ian Jackson ran the event and an excellent barbecue and great
atmosphere made the long journey more than worthwhile. For a full

ground for the Halifax Hurricanes and a great days sailing with a good
turnout from across the zone. Following some challenges getting into the
club, everyone was on the water and racing by 11.30, which ensured we
managed 7 races during the day. The weather and the wind were kind to
all the fleets, meaning the smaller sailors were not overpowered, but
giving enough wind for some very competitive sailing in the larger
fleets. For the full story go to David Dobson's Report @ Halifax 2005 |

Yet
another fabulous day for the North Zone T15'ers, with 34 sailors. Much fun
and great sailing was shown by all and some very competitive windsurfing
took place in all the fleets. The weather was kind and the wind, whilst
not allowing much planing did appear and made sure that everyone could
sail without needing to be rescued. Windsurfing is definitely alive and
kicking if the T15 fleets are anything to go by. David

| North
Lincs. again hosted the first T15 event of the year, and provided great
hospitality yet again. David Dobson was on form, marshalling the hoards to
guarantee a superb day of racing. The 6.6 metre fleet had 4 races and was
very competitive and seems to have leaped to a new level this year so
watch this space... Connor came 2nd and unfortunately Kai was unable to
attend. A good kick off to the year with some grit and determination from
all the sailors. David Dobson's Report @

North Lincs Invaders and Rother Valley
Renegades seemed like a lot of people when Connor turned up as the sole
representative of the Halifax Hurricanes T15 Windsurfing Team. The wind
was very light all day and quite a bit of sail pumping was needed to get
round the course, however the big lesson of the day was always take a
board with a daggerboard, because wind or not, the race will go on and
trying to get upwind, with little wind, is impossible without one...Connor
sailed in the 6.6 metre class and came second, out of two. Lesson learned! David

| 2004 Race meeting #2 at Amble in Northumberland |
 |
Having established that no-one was
going to get beaten up for trying, Connor managed to enlist his younger
brother as the second member of Halifax Hurricanes, for the second event
which was held at the Coquet Sailing Club. There was a bit more wind this
time around, but not a a lot more... |
| Again it was a 3 team
event, but this time the Invaders were elsewhere and the Hurricanes faced
the Coquet Crushers and friendly rivals the Renegades. Connor was the only
entrant in the 6.6 metre class with the older Invader sailors missing, so
he decided to win all races ahead of the fleet - 7 times. Kai sailed in
the 3.5 metre class (probably his 8th time windsurfing ever!) and managed
to come third in one race, whilst scoring 5th (out of 5) overall. Kai did
however win the most determined sailor award for the day, which just made
his smile even bigger. David

| 2004 Race Meeting #3 at Rother Valley |
|
 |
Rother Valley was another
3 team event with the Crushers taking a bow this time. It was a sunny day,
for a change, and the wind built up steadily during the day - this of
course suited the Hurricanes who are used to sailing in gale force winds.
Kai sailed in the 3.5 metre class and Connor in the 6.6 metre class. The
3.5 & 4.5 fleets sailed together as did the 5.5 and 6.6 fleets
This is Kai winning race number 5 to give him 5th
position overall.
|
 |
 |
 |
Connor was still struggling with the
daggerboard concept in the first 2 races and then as luck would have it
the wind kicked in and off he went giving him a 1st for the day
This is Connor accelerating past the
fleet, sailing a 6.2 metre Naish Boxer.

2004 Race meeting #4 at Surfstore |
|
Many windsurfers know
of Surfstore because of the definitive kit catalogue they produce every
year. Mike Birt is test editor for Windsurf magazine. However, nothing
prepares you for the superb set-up. OK, first of all you have to find it,
but then you drive down to the shop which has superb facilities which
include their very own lake.... |
This
is Christina,
the latest team member of the Halifax Hurricanes, who
recently started to learn to windsurf and yet managed to come 9th in her
first ever windsurfing race, out of a fleet of 16 sailors in the 3.5
metre
class.
|

the different fleets would take.
|
With so many races going on the fleets were
queuing up to get the best upwind starting slots.
|

Connor seemed to forget he was there to race and started practicing his
jumps

|
David

The 3.5 metre fleet not only had to race on the
water, but also had a race up the hill to confirm their finishing position

Everyone turned up for
the final event, with sailors representing all the zone clubs. Racing was
split into 3 fleets: 3.5 metre, 4.5 metre and a combined 5.5/6.6 metre
fleet |
Another fine 3.5 metre finish
|

|
In the 6.6/5.5 metre
fleet, spectators were treated to the international sailing skills of
Richard Hamilton and Alex Griffiths (Mistral Junior One Design). How do
you sail upwind so quickly?

|
...and off they go

|
And so the day and the
season come to an end.
David announced that the Invaders had not only
won the day, but had a well deserved Series Trophy to take home.
